Jetson TK1 problem: No HDMI output or LAN connection

I have been using Jetson TK1 board smoothly with R21.5 . Suddenly during some wiring on the GPIO Header, the board restarted and then the HDMI output and LAN connection not working. The LAN LED’s not blinking at all when connected to router. The board powers up and I can access it via Serial Console but the HDMI and LAN part not working at all.

Is that a kernel problem or hardware problem? I tried flashing again but due to disabled LAN port, the flash can’t be successful. Any help?

Here is my device log during boot:

I don’t know if the early PCIe message is important or not…I have a PCIe NIC on the TK1 I got my boot log from. Otherwise it looks more or less normal.

I see this which is a very good sign:

[ 6.867275] EXT4-fs (mmcblk0p1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
[ 6.878397] VFS: Mounted root (ext4 filesystem) on device 179:1.

Mostly it looks ok. Your last line here where it stops abruptly:

* Stopping NVID

…should be:

* Stopping NVIDIA specific first-boot scriptESC[74G[ OK ]

I am thinking perhaps this is nothing more than a file system error. Although a clone takes quite a bit of time, you might want to clone just to see if the file system is readable, and then run fsck.ext4 on a read-only loopback mount of the clone if the clone succeeds. This would tell you about corruption. Having the wrong pins shorted could exceed the capability to journal.

For information on cloning a TK1 see:
https://elinux.org/Jetson/Cloning

If you don’t want to clone, you might just flash again (R21.6 is out anyway).

Thanks for the reply. I tried to re-flash several times but no luck. Im just wondering why the LAN port LED stopped blinking except a critical hardware failure.

I am seriously worried if I messed up anything while tinkering on the GPIO header. Can you please explain a bit more on the statement “Having the wrong pins shorted could exceed the capability to journal” ?

There are a lot of software reasons why the LAN wouldn’t work even if hardware is good. Do you have a serial console cable? If so more can be learned than just watching normal boot.

The file system uses a journal, and if a change to data isn’t marked as valid (flushing), then replaying the journal puts the disk back to an earlier state. This means the system will not be corrupted, but it doesn’t mean data won’t be lost. For this to work the hardware itself has to function. It is possible that if power is applied wrong something in the eMMC or other parts of the system could have an unrecoverable change to what was “memorized” even if hardware isn’t damaged. Journals work for certain known failures…randomly shorting the wrong pins won’t be covered by that.

If you can clone it implies the eMMC and everything using it is functional. If this can’t be done, then you probably do have a hardware failure.

I have flashed the system with R21.6 and then tried to clone the partition table

Can you please tell from the info if there is a corrupted file system? I am kinda novice here, and I appreciate your guidance.

After flashing with R21.6 and cloning the partition table, the Orange LED on the ethernet port lit up. Then after rebooting, it went down.

I have tried to get the Ethernet status via Console:

ubuntu@tegra-ubuntu:/etc/network$ sudo ifup eth0
Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.
ubuntu@tegra-ubuntu:/etc/network$ sudo ifdown eth0
ifdown: interface eth0 not configured
ubuntu@tegra-ubuntu:/etc/network$ sudo ifconfig eth0 up
eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
ubuntu@tegra-ubuntu:/etc/network$ sudo dhclient eth0
Cannot find device "eth0"

I have cloned the whole system image successfully. Could u please tell which section on the rootfs should be checked specifically? Thanks in advance.

First, referring to this:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1026896/jetson-tk1/-jetson-tk1-boot-quot-gk20a-0-unrecognized-ioctl-cmd-quot-/

Every hardware device in the system is essentially referred to as a file. The IOCTL calls are additional commands on top of normal file commands, and are communications with a driver to hardware instead of to a real file. The unknown IOCTL implies a command was sent to the driver which the driver does not know about. Either the driver you expected was not loaded, or the program issuing the command expected a different driver. The gk20 refers to Tegra hardware, and would use an NVIDIA driver (versus what comes with Ubuntu).

Normally, if you could reach a console (such as via serial console), you would run this command to verify drivers:

sha1sum -c /etc/nv_tegra_release

Perhaps examining the clone will help determine if this is the case.

Before mounting the clone, run this command to see which loop device is used…I will assume it is “/dev/loop0” in examples below, but adjust for your situation:

losetup --find

This names the first unused loop device. When root (sudo) finds an unused device the device is also created…when non-root runs this command the next loop device is found, but it isn’t created. Each time you “cover” a device with loopback there must be an unused device to do it with (and sometimes this is automatically generated), and each time a device is “uncovered” the loop device is freed and it becomes usable again. What you need to be careful with is that sometimes stopping a program from using the loopback device does not free it…but sometimes it does. You may find you need to check “losetup --find” as a non-root user to make sure the next loop device is what you expect. E.g., if you had no loop devices and the first unused loop device is loop0, then you mount your clone on loop and then umount it, “losetup --find” might respond “loop1” if “loop0” is not released…or it might respond “loop0” if loop0 was released…your fsck.ext4 command will be on the attached loop device. I am assuming you have loop0 attached:

# mount as first unused device, e.g., loop0 by automatic attach of loop:
sudo -s
mkdir /home/you/mnt
sudo mount -o loop,ro /where/ever/it/is/clone.img /home/you/mnt
# Now you can explore ~/mnt. Run "losetup --find" to verify the next unused device is loop1.
# If "next" is loop1 it implies the clone.img is currently covered by "loop0".
# You can explore "/home/you/mnt/" and it should show the file system, but we don't
# want to do that since we expect corruption.
sudo umount /home/you/mnt
sudo fsck.ext4 /dev/loop0
exit

The fsck.ext4 command is what checks for corruption. After this is complete you can mount the loopback clone again and explore…any defects due to corruption should be fixed. Clone used as a replacement to system.img can now take place…if it was corruption causing the issue then corruption should be fixed. If critical data is missing from the file system, then this cannot be fixed.

About drivers: The NVIDIA drivers checked by the sha1sum command listed above can be done manually, but the “-c” argument to automatically find the sum of all files listed won’t be automatic since the loopback image is not mounted on “/” (it’s at “/home/you/mnt”). You can copy and paste one line at a time llike this:

# If line is
c0067724f7ea174ac845bcf3262916f4cdc68fee */usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
# Run command:
sha1sum -c /home/you/mnt/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
# Compare the output to
c0067724f7ea174ac845bcf3262916f4cdc68fee

(perhaps there is an easier way, I haven’t looked)

Also, while the clone is mounted, verify the permissions of “/home/you/mnt/usr/bin/sudo”:

cd /home/you/mnt/usr/bin/
ls -l ./sudo
cd -

…the permissions should include “-rwsr-xr-x.”.

I have accessed TK1 via console to check drivers and it found okey.

After cloning the file system to my host PC and after mounting and remounting it, it confirms as a loop0 device. Then I ran

sudo fsck.ext4 /dev/loop0

which gives the following error:

e2fsck 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
fsck.ext4: Invalid argument while trying to open /dev/loop0

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
or
    e2fsck -b 32768 <device>

So I think the file system is corrupted somehow. Now searching google for possible solutions, but please let me know if any recoverable solution is known to you as a pro.

Thanks in advance.

What is the exact byte size of your clone file? “ls -l file_name.img” gives the exact size…I just want to be sure you are looking at the raw image and not the compressed/sparse image. I think some of the older clone operations only produced the raw image, but some may produce a sparse/compressed image. Look for anything in the Linux_for_Tegra directory or bootloader subdirectory which might have the “.raw” file name suffix. Keep in mind that a normal flash creates this…use “ls -l” on the file to see if the time stamp corresponds to the start of the clone. If in doubt you may want to clone again and look closely at file names and time stamps.

The good news is that this tends to validate that the hardware works. A new flash might do the trick, but you still may want backup from the clone even if there is some corruption. Let’s see first if the clone file is the right one. The exact byte size can be used to determine the difference between a raw image and a sparse image.

Sorry for running into this, may I ask what is the current problem now? Ehternet is not up?

A custom board or a devkit? Anything changed after install rel-21.6?

Yes, Ethernet and HDMI not working, I can just access the Jetson-TK1 devkit via console. The system was rebooted suddenly and after that this is happening. Maybe some corruption on file system.

I would be really happy if its not a hardware fault. I don’t wanna boot into earlier system images or files as I had already backup up those files. I just want to perform a fresh installation of R21.6.

However, during flashing the eMMC, I see it creates partition so I can assume the eMMC is formatted and partitioned properly. So if there is any bad block, it should be cleared up.

I am also taking a look on the cloned raw img but not sure how the time stamp information gives me a light.

I have tried to boot from SD card but no luck. But I assume there should be some kind of file system (like bootloader) that comes up during boot sequence where it says “No Ethernet found”

However, I couldn’t check the eMMC filesystem (mmcblk0p1) using ‘fsck’ because its always mounted. So I wanted to change runlevel 1 (singe user mode) using the command

init 1

which returns the following error:

[ 296.255890] gk20a gk20a.0: unrecognized ioctd
[ 296.288709] gk20a gk20a.0: unrecognized ioctl cmd: 0x8008486d

[ 298.210720] init: Error while reading from descriptor: Bad file descriptor

So I think the bootloader portion couldn’t load the driver for HDMI or Ethernet for some reason (maybe corruption). Am I missing something?

Stalling at the kernel prompt on SD card boot tends to say the hardware was working, but execution did not find a kernel at the location it branched to. If you can edit the extlinux.conf file you can create a duplicate boot entry, and on that entry exchange the APPEND “rw” to be “ro” and the file system will be mounted read-only. Then you can fsck.ext4 directly on the Jetson.

However, my thought was to test the cloned raw image with fsck…I suspect that when you cloned you may have been looking at the sparse “.img” file instead of the “.img.raw” file…only the raw version can be loopback mounted and fsck.ext4 run on it.

If you have successfully flashed again after this then things should be ok, but I am not sure of what you’ve added/modified since the original incident. Do you have the exact byte size of the raw clone? This can provide a lot of information with regard to whether the eMMC can be read. The old clone tools produced only the raw file, the new one produces both a raw and sparse image…make sure you look only at the raw image.

I will check the filesystem clone for corruption, but FYI the boot not stalled on the kernel prompt, I just printed upto that.

Changing the extlinux.conf to ‘ro’ mood stuck actually. Here is the boot log

The thing confusing me is that why ‘ERROR: tegra-pcie: failed to power on PHY: -110’ as the Ethernet and HDMI are on PCIe region. Isn’t that causing the problem?

The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present.
keys:Continue to wait, or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery

That’s an important detail that the log was incomplete and was not the point of getting stuck…it changes a lot.

This is important (in combination with the PHY message):

The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present.
keys:Continue to wait, or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery

What happens if you press “M” and attempt manual recovery? I am assuming at this point that one of the power rails may have taken damage from the short. If there is a power rail in common with eMMC and PCIe then it makes more sense.

However, if you can clone, then it tends to imply there is no permanent hardware damage to the eMMC. I couldn’t tell you if PCIe was damaged permanently or not.

Are you able to fsck.ext4 the loopback image of the raw clone?

Pressing the ‘S’ or ‘M’ key does nothing, so I have reflashed R21.6 on mmcblk0p1 using the command:

sudo ./flash.sh -S 14580MiB jetson-tk1 mmcblk0p1

I think this command flashes with u-boot.bin image. How could I clone the exact raw image from the board? The commands found on https://elinux.org/Jetson/Cloning seems to clone the fastboot image, not u-boot.

cd bootloader
sudo mv system.img system.img.raw
sudo ./nvflash --read APP system.img --bl ardbeg/fastboot.bin --go

Any suggestion for proper cloning? Please help!
