AMD Ryzen 7 integrated GPU + NVidia 1650 in same linux machine cause Xorg to default to outdated drivers

I don’t know if I’m posting in the correct place for this, but I’ve recently run across a problem with the newest AMD Ryzen 7 integrated GPU combined with a GTX1650 (notebook).

Short description: Xorg defaults to old drivers, causing fixed resolution (800x600) in notebook with AMD Ryzen 7 3500H and nVidia GTX1650.

Problem: When the machine boots, it can be booted into only 800x600 resolution or, if booted from BIOS directly, 1920x1080. In each instance, the machine never switches graphics cards and the output of nvidia-smi is:

indicating that the nVidia card is OFF.
In addition, it appears that the machine loads the ati driver rather than the more modern amdgpu driver as it should for the AMD Vega.

Questions:
Is this a case of there being a sort of OPTIMUS configuration involved? If so, is there any equivalent for nVidia-Prime, Bumblebee, or suse-prime available to switch between graphics cards?
Is this something entirely different?

Note: I have tried installing three versions of Optimus handling software to no effect, presumably because it’s an AMD+nVidia configuration instead of Intel+nVidia.

This problem cripples any software that needs to rescale the display, in addition to causing the user some issues.

Any assistance is appreciated.

You’re running kernel 4.12 which is too old to support the RyzenG. Please upgrade to at least kernel 4.19.

Thanks; I did try that earlier in the process of figuring this out.
I have booted to all of: 4.19.48 and 4.19.47, 4.12,14-lp151.27, and 4.12.14-lp151.28. The results are identical on all kernels and the 4.19.48 doesn’t load the AMD drivers either.

Any other suggestions?

Ok, looks like the H-model is brand new, support for it is only in kernel 5.0 and up. Please install a 5.0 or 5.1 kernel and create a new nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks! I feel like a fool, immediately updated to 4.19 because I knew the Ryzen series didn’t play nice with 4.12, but never thought to update higher. . .
That completely solved the ‘not loading amdgpu’ problem.

What I did next: installed kernel 5.1.8 and tried nvidia driver. Got nothing with the nVidia driver through nvidia-smi.
Guessed that the problem is the SUSE Leap 15.1 driver is the one with kmp for 4.12, so uninstalled it, changed repository to the repo for Tumbleweed which has kernel 5.1 and nvidia driver with kmp for 5.1. Tried again.

Having done this and rebooted we now get:

NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn’t communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

Looks like the nVidia driver isn’t running. It is installed, though and xorg actually looks at it: (from xorg log)

It’s not a huge issue now that we’ve gotten the kernel straightened out, but it’s pretty weird.

You’re missing the correct gcc, the kernel you installed was compiled using
gcc version 9.1.1
and the installed system gcc is 7.4.0 so the nvidia kernel modules don’t compile. You’ll probably have to install the gcc9 package.

That would definitely cause the problem.

Having fixed that, we have the nvidia driver up and running alongside amdgpu, though the nvidia card is still OFF according to nvidia-smi:

So, it’s not a huge issue, but still not sure how to switch to the nvidia card.

This leads me to believe it’s a pseudo-optimus configuration somehow. (Also, I can’t turn off one card or the other in the BIOS, just as with the optimus configs.)

Yes, it’s an Optimus system but you first had to get both gpus running to set this up. Please install the package suse-prime
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_SUSE_Prime
and post the files

Those AMD/Nvidia combos seem to be ready for prime time now so pop up but there’s very little data about them so could you do me a favor?
It’s unknown if PRIME Synchronisation (tear free display) works on those systems or if still it has to be implemented in the amdgpu kernel driver. Please set the kernel parameter

nvidia-drm.modeset=1

switch to nvidia profile and reboot.

sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset

should return ‘Y’ if done right. Afterwards, please post the output of

xrandr --prop

Any advices how to modify Xorg.conf to get system running on nvidia 1660 Ti ? , Kernel updated to 5.1.5 + gcc 9+ installed on : Linux Mint - latest version .
Have a similar laptop - Asus TUF DU and it looks like similar problems but on Mint distro …
