Jetson TX1 stuck on book after updating

I recently started using my jetson after forgetting about it for a year. I booted it up and ubuntu asked me to update so not thinking I did. Now when I try to boot up it gets stuck on

systemd[1]: Started Journal Service.

but I can still SSH into it and access everything. Not really sure what to do

A serial console boot log would be nice, but given ssh works, the output of “dmesg” would also be useful. You can either highlight the log and then click on the “code” icon “</>”, or attach it as a file (requires hovering the mouse over the quote icon in an existing post, and then using the paper clip icon which will show up during mouse hover).

Also, what do you see from “df -H -T” and “lsblk -f”?

dmesg

It’s strange because I don’t see any outright errors related to anything which would stop normal access. I do see fairly normal output after “Started Journal Service”. Do you get anything other than “ok” from “sha1sum -c /etc/nv_tegra_release”? Is there anything unusual about the monitor itself, e.g., adapter cables versus native HDMI? Is it correct that you just performed a normal package update, and not a full release upgrade?

“sha1sum -c /etc/nv_tegra_release” was all ok’s.

I have tried 3 different monitors now. Just regular hdmi.

Ubuntu asked me to do a system update and I clicked yes it downloaded and then restarted and when it restarted this started happening

Since you have access, I’m wondering if perhaps the update is just long and blocking other activities. How fast is your network access, and have you allowed the unit to sit with network access for at least several hours? Does this command succeed, does it block, or does it give an error?

sudo apt update

If this works, then does this also work?

sudo apt --fix-broken install

If that works, then what happens when you issue these two commands:

sudo systemctl isolate multi-user.target
sudo systemctl isolate graphical.target

Its been on a network connection for a couple days.

sudo apt update

Then the last 2 commands just didnt return anything but made the screen go black with a cursor

None of the “apt” commands should cause a screen to go black, but it is possible some sort of energy saving mode kicked in when no activity is detected at the local keyboard (ssh and serial console do not trigger keeping the GUI awake). It is probably time to look at the GUI logs.

Edit the file “/etc/X11/xorg.conf”. In section “Device”, add “ModeDebug”:

Section "Device"
...
   <s>ModeDebug</s>
   Option "ModeDebug"
...
EndSection

…then reboot.

Once the problem occurs save a copy of “/var/log/Xorg.0.log”, and add that to this thread (if you hover your mouse over the quote icon in the upper right, then other icons should show up…the “paper clip” icon is for attaching files…you might need to rename file suffix to “.txt”). Or you can paste the log in if it is surrounded by the “code” tags (icon looks like “</>”).

The log should tell us what the driver itself is thinking.

I didnt mean the Apt commands gave the blank screen it was the last 2 commands.

I attached the log like you said.
Xorg.0.txt (14.4 KB)

That log did not include the “ModeDebug” content. Looks like I should have shown it as follows for the xorg.conf content:

Section "Device"
...
    Option "ModeDebug"
...
EndSection

(I will correct my original which was missing the “Option” key word)

I attached the new log to this comment
Xorg.0.txt (14.4 KB)

This is odd, I still don’t see the ModeDebug content. The log understands through EDID that the monitor is a BenQ RL2455, but none of the extended debug content on the EDID is present (and if ModeDebug is used, then that information should be there). If you run this command, what is the last file named?

ls -ltr /var/log/Xorg.*

The last entry should be Xorg.0.log. If it is instead something like Xorg.1.log, then this would explain why the log does not contain the ModeDebug information (there should be a “mode pool” near the end, and a number of accepted/valid modes listed, along with rejected modes).

I think I added the options wrong. There was already an options tag so I think the mode debug didnt work. I have attached what I think has the mode debug in it now.

Also ls -ltr /var/log/Xorg.* last file was Xorg.0.log
Xorg.0.txt (14.4 KB)

Something odd is still going on, and the log lacks the extended information. Can you post the content of your “/etc/X11/xorg.conf”? You could just rename it “xorg.conf.txt” and then attach it here.

Also, the output of “head -n 1 /etc/nv_tegra_release”?

Make sure that upon booting up the timestamp from “ls -l /var/log/Xorg.0.log” coincides with the “date” command (making sure the timestamp of the current system matches a recently written log).

I attached the xorg.conf

The output for head -n 1 /etc/nv_tegra_release
# R24 (release), REVISION: 2.1, GCID: 8222915, BOARD: t210ref, EABI: aarch64, DATE: Sat Jan 14 21:31:05 UTC 2017
xorg.txt (720 Bytes)

That is a major revelation…R24.2.1 is extraordinarily old. I say this not just because it was old, but instead because this was a time of transition from 64-bit kernel with 32-bit user space to being truly 64-bit in both kernel space and user space. Much of what applies to debugging and drivers is completely different in that and earlier releases. It is quite possible the GPU driver did not respond to the ‘Option “ModeDebug”’ in that release, although I could not guarantee this.

There were also a number of updates, that if they mixed the incorrect 32-bit/64-bit user space applications, then either it wouldn’t run or it would run incorrectly. This is what I would call a “fragile” time since just months before no 64-bit ARM even existed in the wild. It was all an experiment at that time. There have been many releases since then, and even releases considered “old” are much newer than R24.x. I suspect some of the updates may have been unaware of the mix of 32-bit and 64-bit.

Do you have a specific need to stick to this release? Is it possible you could flash with the most recent release? FYI, the most recent JetPack/SDK Manager release is available here:
https://developer.nvidia.com/embedded/jetpack
(you might need to go there, log in, and then click the link again if redirect fails)

I dont need to stick to any version. I have nothing on it, I just started using it when this all happened. Are there directions to flash it with a newer version?

Do you have an Ubuntu 18.04 host PC available? If so, then it is fairly simple since you can just go to the URL in #17, log in, go to that URL again (redirect doesn’t work, otherwise you could just go there and log in), and then download the SDK Manager. The URL for the actual steps are there as well, found here:
https://docs.nvidia.com/sdk-manager/install-with-sdkm-jetson/index.html

It probably isn’t necessary, but you might run this on the PC before installing the SDKM on the host (or run this only if you run into some dependency issue during the “.deb” install on the host):

sudo apt update
sudo apt --fix-broken install
sudo apt-get install libgconf-2-4 libcanberra-gtk-module
sudo apt-get install python

The file downloaded is (at this time) “sdkmanager_1.0.1-5538_amd64.deb”. You could install this on the host PC via “sudo dpkg -i sdkmanager_1.0.1-5538_amd64.deb” (there is more than one possible command to do this). Once this is installed you would start the app as a regular user via “sdkmanager” on the command line (you will be asked for a password at some point so that sudo can be used selectively by SDKM). The GUI starts, and you have several options for picking what you want to do. You could pick to just flash (and I would recommend not running any kind of extra package install until flash is verified…extra package install can be done at a later time). You will want to have a keyboard/mouse/monitor attached to the recovery mode Jetson, and the micro-B USB between the Jetson and host PC. Typing “sdkmanager” should start the app.

Note that you don’t need any IP address or networking from the Jetson during flash…this is only for adding extra packages after the Jetson is up and running normally. However, the host PC will need internet access to download various content before flash can start. Once the Jetson is flashed and booted it is good to have internet for updates, and so it doesn’t hurt if the Jetson has internet access. During extra package install the fully booted Jetson requires direct networking between host PC and Jetson. This can be done via either ethernet through a common router, or else through the micro-B USB since the fully booted Jetson default configuration provides a virtual wired ethernet adapter over the micro-B USB. If you have disabled the flash step, then you can repeat extra package management at any time without flashing again.

After you have flashed once with SDKM you will have access to the command line tools as well if you wish. On the host PC this will be at:

~/nvidia/nvidia_sdk/JetPack_<b><SomeVersion></b>_Linux_P2180/Linux_for_Tegra/

(and “SomeVersion” will probably be “4.3.1”…the “P2180” is a reference to the TX1 dev kit)

What if I dont have a ubuntu host computer?
