Powermizer bug - adaptive performance level stuck on highest - gtx670m linux mint 14 driver 304/310/

Hello!

For a few days now the performance level on powermizer has been stuck on the highest level (3).

Note; all of the drivers I’ve tested have been installed via Software Sources.

My system:
Asus ROG laptop G75VW
GeForce gtx 670m 3gb
Linux mint 14 Cinnamon x64

What I have tried:
A clean re-install of linux mint 14
All the different Nvidia drivers; current, 304 experimental, 310 experimental and 313 experimental
All with the respective Nvidia-settings version
Powertop, laptopmode tools, pm-utils; tried every possible powersaving setting I have found. With or without AC power plugged in.

All of the above in different order and combinations twice (before formatting and after reinstalling)

I have also flashed my bios to the newest version. All settings in BIOS are default, and have been, since I bought it. Powermizer have worked previously.

More details on my problem:
After I first installed linux mint 14 on this laptop for the first time (Been using ubuntu/mint for years on my desktop) about 2-3 weeks ago, powermizer was working perfectly. At that time I used the experimental 310 driver.
I think the problem started after an update to some packages from software updater. I don’t know if this is related in any way though.

My gpu is now constantly at 65-69 degrees C. Is this dangerous?

I think my problem is the same as this reported bug: Bug #1096155 “PowerMizer's performance level goes max to lv.2 fr...” : Bugs : nvidia-graphics-drivers package : Ubuntu

He have created a topic on this forum before, but seeing no helpful responses and the fact that my problem might not be the same, I chose to create a new topic.

If there are any piece of information I’ve neglected to include, please say so, and I will happily provide it =)

Thanks in advance for any help!

EDIT: Added linux install version under “My system”.
EDIT 2: Fixed typos.

EDIT 3: Added nvidia-bug-report.log.gz LINK

Hi pravuz,
I have seen that you wrote in my thread, but to tell you I don’t believe that we share the same problem, as my problem appears only when NVIDIA OPTIMUS is enabled. I’m starting to suspect that in my case Bumblebee Project is to blame. In your case, my first guess is that something force PowerMizer to use the highest possible level.

This happens when you use multiple monitors. For example take a look at this thread:
PowerMizer's performance level always on level 2 (GTX 580) - Linux - NVIDIA Developer Forums

Please take a look at this two links as well you have only one monitor connected. After reading them try for a test to force PowerMizer at a certain level(try all). Don’t forget to reboot or kill X after you edited your xorg.conf file.
http://owened.net/how-to-force-nvidia-powermizer-performance-in-linux/
http://guilleml.wordpress.com/2011/04/27/nvidia-powermizer-on-linux/
If you are able to force it to all levels then most likely something is using a lot of graphic power.

By the way I couldn’t find this options documented anywhere, but as far as I know they have the same names as Windows OS’ registry keys from the NVIDIA driver under Windows. Oh and one more thing some doesn’t work, for example PowerMizerEnable have no effect at all.

I hope this helps you better analize your problem.

Hi! thanks for your reply!

Yeah, optimus is what I though separated our problem…

I don’t have 2 active displays. At school I use only the laptop screen, but at home I use only my external monitor. But the problem persist regardless :\

In powertop from terminal, I’ve adjusted everything related to PCIe and Nvidia to “good”, which means the kernel can save power with the normal techniques. But to no avail.

When I installed Linux Mint 14 however, I had my extra monitor connected, and at first Mint used both displays (extended mode). Can my problem be caused by this? So that maybe the kernel/driver is configured to use 2 displays?

Again, thanks for the response, it pointed me in the right direction =)

Come to think of it, the first time I installed Mint 14 on this laptop, I didn’t have anything connected (mouse, keyboard, extra monitor etc), then powermizer worked. (See my first post).

Like I said, the problem came after some update, maybe after an update to kernel/driver (Idunno x), when I did have my extra monitor connected.

I’ll try and install another nvidia driver without any monitor connected, maybe that helps ^^
I’ll report back…

Nope, didn’t help installing the nvidia driver again. this is the commmand I used:

sudo aptitude install nvidia-experimental-310 nvidia-settings-310 nvidia-settings-310-updates

Did you try to lock PowerMizer to a lowwer level, to see whether it’s even possible? I’m not sure what “good” means to the kernel and driver in powertop, so I think it will be a good check. Also you may try to check PowerMizer from the command line when X is stopped. I think that nvidia-settings should be able to print current Performance level. Check it’s help.

To stop the X server do this command from run level different from 7. Try a lowwer one like 2 or 3, because there are less services started:
sudo service gdb/lightdm/kdm stop

How do you lock the powermizer to a lower level?

“good” in powertop settings just means that it has configured the kernel (i think) to allow for various powersaving techniques. Not entirely sure about it to be honest x]

Haven’t tried stopping the x-server and printing powermizer, I’ll see what I can find out about printing powermizer to console ^^

I tried running nvidia-settings from terminal, curious output:

ERROR: Cannot open display 'pravuz-G75VW:0'.

ERROR: Unable to assign attribute RedBrightness specified on line 44 of
       configuration file '/home/pravuz/.nvidia-settings-rc' (no Display
       connection).

does this mean anything?

The last 2 links that I gave in my first post in this thread show you how. Read them. I’ll give you a little help. Create “/etc/X11/xorg.conf” or you might have one already. Maybe the easiest way will be to autogenerate one with your current configuration. The command for this is:
Xorg -configure
To do this you must stop X with the command I gave you in my previous post and execute in different run level from 7. If you generate xorg.conf file that wat copy it to /etc/X11 and edit it. If you just create it, open it and add Device section. For more information how to do it see the two links at the top that I mentioned. Some of the options are documented, but others aren’t as the ones you will use to lock your PowerMizer. If you are interested in the other possible options look at ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/310.32/README/README.txt and check Appendix B.

P.S. I’m not sure whether you know, but you can change run levels with Ctrl+Alt+F*, where * is a number from 1 to 7.

Thanks for the reply & help, and sorry for the delayed answer.

I’ve added Option “Coolbits” “1” to Device section and Screen section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf, like specified in the beginning of appendix B “The following driver options are supported by the NVIDIA X driver. They may be specified either in the Screen or Device sections of the X config file.”

But I don’t get any overclocking options in the nvidia-settings client, as the appendix says I should get (see the part with coolbits).

And so without this ability, I’m unable to force powermizer to a lower level:S

(Yes I have restarted x server, even tried restarting the computer, still no page labeled “Clock Frequencies” in nvidia-settings)

What am I doing wrong?

Nevermind! adding

Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x2222; PowerMizerLevel=0x3; PowerMizerDefault=0x3; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x3"

in Device section actually worked! Thanks Ytsolov :D

As a final word regarding this topic: It is now “solved” (nevermind, see following posts), I had to manually control performance level.

I found this page to be the most helpful regarding how to manually control performance level: http://wiki.etechnik-rieke.de/index.php/NVidia_PowerMizer

So if you can force PowerMizer to a certain level then most likely something is using your video card. I don’t know how to see which process is using the video and if I have time I may try to check(maybe one of the commands in nvidia-bug-report.sh does this, but I haven’t checked). You may try to wait for official response from the moderators.

I found out you can use nvidia-smi (just enter the command nvidia-smi in terminal) to get a print of processes using the gpu. Problem is, apparently, my graphics card doesn’t support it, all it says is “N/A” and “Not supported” :(

Sorry for spamming my own topic here, but after generating nvidia-bug-report.log I searched through it after (EE) (matching case), and found this:

(The whole log can be found here, added it to original post aswell)

I’d really like to know what this means. heh :p

any help appreciated :)

Bump, would really like an answer as to what those errors are please :)

I suspect that those errors are what keeps my gpu running at maximum performance all the time, unless I force it down, which results in a choppy experience :\

Any help/tip/answers are much appreciated! Especially an official response from nvidia!

Mehh… Decided to do a clean re-install of linux mint 14 cinnamon x64 with NO external monitor/keyboard etc connected (just the laptop alone). I chose nvidia-310 experimental driver from software sources. And my issue appears to have been resolved, powermizer is working as it should.
