Nvidia driver with GTX 650 and arch linux. refusing more than 1024x768 [solved]

Hello pals. I’m a folding at home fan, but, since last month, when I own my GTX 650Ti I’m not so happy.

Let’s go

  • Driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-319.49-custom Distro: arch linux 64-bits, systemd, with kernel 3.10.10-1-ARCH

Other drivers i’ve tried: 326 beta, 319 stock (directly from installer, without “–add-this-kernel”)
314-XX (from official repositories of arch linux)

Any experience with nvidia drivers on linux? yes, on my 9500GT (XFX brand) with ubuntu 7. Any ok…

Issue.
If I make a xorg.conf with “nvidia-xconfig” (root) I only ups X with 640x480 or less.

Without Xorg.conf, up to 1024. but not with 1440x900, but no folding (don’t detects the GPU)
solution to folding: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia.conf with the contents

Section "Device"
  Identifier "nvidia"
  Driver     "nvidia"
  BusID      "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

grub options

nomodeset rdblacklist=nouveau noapic clocksource=hpet

Any of these options have you tried without? Yes, rdblacklist, noapic, nomodeset

but, doesn’t matter what I do… I can’t looks 1440x900. It’s go until 1024x768. Screen is a Samsung SyncMaster 920LM

On windows, everything ok, including 3D stereo, what means, everything ok with the GPU

Let’s see bugreport

command line flags:

What may I do?

Same posts I did on arch linux forums, but nothing else
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1316149#p1316149

Another thing I’ve seen now…

On installer, module’s installer, from AUR, there’s this command

gzip "${pkgdir}/usr/lib/modules/${_extramodules}/nvidia.ko"

With

pkgver=325.15
_extramodules=extramodules-3.10-lqx
_kernver="$(cat /usr/lib/modules/${_extramodules}/version)"
pkgrel=1
pkgdesc="NVIDIA drivers for linux-lqx."
arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
url="http://www.nvidia.com/"
depends=('linux-lqx>=3.10' 'linux-lqx<3.11' "nvidia-utils=${pkgver}")

But, on “kernel source folder” there’s not this “nvidia.ko”

Use gzip to extract the bug report as I was informed by a dev on my thread the bug reported uses gzip segments and does not extract properly with some archive programs so use gzip at your console and it should show the full bug report.

Application profiles for the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver, version 319.49

Last modified: Tue Aug 13 19:56:21 PDT 2013

These profiles were provided by NVIDIA and should not be modified. If you

wish to change the defaults provided here, you can override them by creating

custom rules in /etc/nvidia/nvidia-application-profiles-rc (which will apply

system-wide) or, for a given user, $HOME/.nv/nvidia-application-profiles-rc

(which will apply to that particular user). See the "APPLICATION PROFILE

SEARCH PATH" section of the NVIDIA Linux Graphics Driver README for more

information.

hm… so interesting.

[ 1210.313] (WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): The EDID read for display device CRT-0 is invalid: the
[ 1210.313] (WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): checksum for EDID version 1 is invalid

may be 'cause?

If yes… I’ve changed, about 30 seconds ago, the fourth one

by the last one (that came with the GPU) but, the same resolution without Xorg.conf (1024x768) and the worst one (640x480) with it

Another thing that may help

nvidia-xconfig --metamodes=1440x900+0+0 --force-generate

Package xorg-server was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xorg-server.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'xorg-server' found
Backed up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.nvidia-xconfig-original'
Backed up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

It’s installed… but I couldn’t find any xorg-server.pc and, not even where I change the PKG_CONFIG_PATH

More tries… (repository driver) and same issue

even with “vga=normal”

Important note is that effects (kwin) work normally, also folding at home, so the driver is working, but don’t at full resolution

It sounds like your monitor is broken. You can try to work around it by setting the IgnoreEDIDChecksum option in the Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but please be aware that depending on how broken the EDID really is, this can cause the driver to output a signal that the monitor doesn’t support and in the (extremely unlikely) worst case, damage the monitor hardware.

aplattner It’s sound strange cause on windows all works normally. I think that it’s GPU’s BIOS (zogis brand) that someone “forget include linux” on support, but let’s see

Tries and more tries, the same issue I’ve got on fedora… without xorg.conf 1024, with it, 640… so I tried kubuntu. At this moment, I’m on 1360x768. I’ve used gtf and xrandr to create parameters to 10-monitor.conf.

At this moment, my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf has these contents

Identifier     "Screen0"
    Device         "DVI-I-0"
    Monitor        "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth    24
    SubSection     "Display"
        Depth       24
    Modes          "1680x1050_60.00" "1440x900_60.00" "1280x1024_60.00" "1024x768_60.00"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

About ignore EDID, well, I’ve not found this option, however thought about this, 'cause on CLI isn’t shown all options…

At this moment, I’ll back to arch linux (reinstalling all) 'cause kubuntu sounds so strange to me.

but, I repeat that on windows it works at all, including 1440x1050 (with new driver), so, I think that not all problem are located on EDID, but I’ll try evenmore

To try help us, this is the bug report from kubuntu. I don’t know if it helps… but, here goes

And, by the way, excuse my english. I’m brazilian, and about eight years I don’t review my speaking/writting, and I don’t believe in google translator

Option "IgnoreEDIDChecksum" "DVI-I-0"

Great, I’m glad it’s working for you. I don’t believe that Windows verifies the EDID checksum, so there is little incentive for monitor manufacturers to make sure that it’s actually correct.
