Strange graphical issue in Linux Mint with GeForce FX 5600

I have installed Linux Mint 15 (XFCE) 32 Bit on an older machine.
The desktop looks like this:

Curiously, when I start the terminal (which is transparent), then it looks like this:

The images were taken using a mobile phone. If I make a screenshot and open it on an other machine everything looks perfect!
Someone here who had a similar problem (and could fix it)?
The behavior is the same with Linux Mint 15 Mate.

During start, the splashscreen first looks normal. Then it changes to this ugly colours.
This is a fresh install of the OS. It also happens when booting from LiveCD.

Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600
Graphic driver: nouveau
Display: Philips Flatscreen TV, connected via DVI

Unfortunately I cannot use the proprietary NVIDIA driver (173.14). The graphic looks OK, but the screen is off center (1 cm of the right border appears on the left side). I tried a lot to fix this (adding modelines in xorg.config etc.) but I was unable to center the screen. With Windows XP the above mentioned configuration (FX 5600 graphics card, Philips flatscreen TV) works with the proprietary NVIDIA driver without any issues.

Which means your GPU generates a correct output (at least its internal representation is correct) but something between the GPU and your monitor is probably physically broken.
Can you reproduce this problem under Windows?
Can you reproduce this problem with nouveau drivers?

This forum is about proprietary closed binary drivers from NVIDIA - can you try running them? Nouveau doesn’t always work correctly in regard to output, so please try to find your bug at bugs.freedesktop.org and if there isn’t anything similar, file a new one.

As I mentioned in my first post, this problem does not occur in Windows.

And I also tried running the proprietary NVIDIA driver (173.14). As stated in my first post, with this driver the graphic looks perfect. BUT the screen is off center (shifted to the right, so that the right border appears on the left side of the screen). I could not find anything in the NVIDIA settings to correct this. And my flatscreen also has no function to center the screen.

So both drivers are unusable for me :-(

Great! Go and file a bug report about this problem at Bugzilla Main Page (choose Driver/nouveau as the component) . NVIDIA unfortunately won’t help you with your problem as your hardware and support for it are now deprecated.

Also make sure the latest kernel doesn’t have this problem (3.12-rc3 at the time of writing) - nouveau has seen a lot of work recently, so your problem may have already been fixed at mainline.
