[Nvidia 319] Conflict with RAM - Failed to initialize DMA (Ubuntu 13.10)

I’ve what I believe is a system conflict with my RAM (3GB in total: 512+512MB in bank 0 slot 1&2 + 1+1GB in bank 1 slot 3&4 - dual channel ddr 400) and my GT220 card.

  1. The 3GB is ok by itself, memtest run fine, I can boot and use VESA driver.
  2. If I install Nvidia driver X fails at boot with error:

  1. If I remove 512MB from 1st slot the driver start fine and work as a charm

How can I better debug the issue? I’ve latest BIOS, Xubuntu 13.10 updated with latest 3.11 kernel (same issue with 3.10).

I’m trying to narrow down the possible cause of the issue, it seems with 3GB RAM some additional components gets initialized (iommu?) to allow using that amount of memory if compared with 2.5GB.

Looking at dmesg when with 3GB ram (i.e. when the card is failing) I noticed these extra lines:

I don’t have any IOMMU option on Bios. As far as I understood, this should not create issues other than stealing 64MB ram for the purpose, but maybe it coudl bring some light into the “failed to initialize DMA” error I got from the NVIDIA driver.

PS: I’ve an AMD Opteron 180 on a ASrock 939S56-M motherboard. Same issue replacing the CPU with my older AMD Athlon X2 and also with previous Nvidia driver version.

anyone, any help? I’m stuck with a 2.5GB RAM max if I want to use the Nvidia driver, while my system supports up to 4GB ram!

Folks - I’ve not been able to find a solution.

I tried with different RAM modules / different combinations but when I go above 2.5GB X does not start.
I played around kernel parameters as well (tried: nopiac, apci=off, iommu=soft, iommu=memaper=2, iommu=noaperture, iommu=allowdac, video=vesa:off, vga=normal etc in different combinations). But no results apart from my PC turn on button that starts to be loose…

Hereby I attach the nvidia bug report with the hope someone can have a look. To me all seems fine, apart of course from the “(EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failed to initialize DMA.” line in xorg logs.

This sounds like a PCI hole problem (see PCI hole - Wikipedia and 3 GB barrier - Wikipedia). I’m guessing that SiS chipset only has 32-bit addressing. The 1GB of video ram counts toward the 4GB maximum along with some other buffers on PCI devices. Normally, this should map to the top of RAM and steal a little bit of that 3GB when you have it, but without the iommu remapping, it can’t. Even with the 3GB in, you wouldn’t be able to address all of that RAM.

that’s interesting - thanks a lot. If it is an hardware constraint and I can’t go above 4GB when summing system ram to video ram, is there a way to tell the nvidia driver to use only 0.5GB instead of 1GB? I would prefer an half GB available for OS rather than the video card.

You shouldn’t be affected by the restriction as your using 64bit.

Have you considered updating to the latest driver (it supports kernel-3.11 without patching)

Your patched driver is more likely to be the cause of the issue IMO.

He can still be restricted if the chipset only can address 32-bits. Given the age of that SiS chipset, that’s likely the case.

I had the same issue with Kernel 3.10 before upgrading to 3.11 so it should not be the patched version. Thanks anyway!

Is there any way I can limit with a kernel parameter the amount of memory used by the card? Or can’t I somehow instruct to allocate the video card memory within 32bit range?

I was able to find a nvidia 8500GT card with 512MB ram, half of my gt220 but I’m getting the very same issue, if I move from 2.5 to 3GB RAM:

I was supposing that by having a card with less memory I could gain something more on system memory but it does not seem to be the case.

On the other side, other two findings:

  • if I remove the nvidia driver and start X just in vesa mode, it works. But of curse performance is not acceptable…
  • in my (older) 32-bit PAE Linux installation, I can use the video card with 3GB ram installed and nvidia driver… but I’m suffering random freezes.

I’m about to give up…

Atch— I installed Ubuntu 13.10 x86 (32-bit with PAE support).

Surprise - I can boot and use X with 3GB ram… no DMA errors, nvidia driver ok (VPDAU etc). However, after some minutes all freezes (testes three times). No message on kernel logs or X, not capable to ssh in.
Removed nvidia driver and went to nouveau. All seems fine again, but again after several minutes all freezes again. So, clearly these freezes are not linked with nvidia driver.

HOWEVER, I’m wondering how it is possible that with a 32-bit kernel I can see the 3GB RAM if it was a “hardware limitation of my SiS chip” (I tried with 3.5GB as well and I see all of them). Or better, I’m pretty convinced that I don’t get the DMA error from the nvidia driver but then some weird conflicts came up…

As suggested by leigh123linux I also tried with the latest nvidia driver but no luck, with the 64bit kernel I get “Failed to initialize DMA” error when >2.5GB ram.

I started to look for a new PC… the time has arrived, Xmas coming closer.

I am running Gentoo Linux on the Zotac Z68ITX-B-E motherboard. It has integrated Intel GPU and NVIDIA GT 430 GPU (it is part of the motherboard - can not be removed). I had same error message in Xorg.0.log:

NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failed to initialize DMA.

I have tried all possible ways to fix it which I was able to find online and error did not go away. I was not able to use NVIDIA as GPU at all - only intel GPU worked.

Finally I updated BIOS of my motherboard and video BIOS of NVDIA GPU and problem has gone. I can use NVIDIA without problem.

So if you struggling of

NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failed to initialize DMA.

then there is one more way to try to resolve it - update BIOS of the motherboard and/or NVIDIA GPU.

You should be aware that updating BIOS is risky procedure. If something will go wrong - you may end up with unworkable GPU or worse. So, while I am offering this way as possible solution - you are on your own if you will decide to update BIOS.

In my case everything went well and as result I have workable NVIDIA GPU.

My software:

NVIDIA binary driver 334.21,

Linux kernel - 3.13.5 with aufs patch.
64 bit system and 16GB of RAM.

All from official Gentoo portage.

I found no Bios for the onboard GT430, nvflash said does not match, i need Bios fpr Subsystem 19DA.1186.
The Zotac Bios from your site are for Subsystem 19DA.1167
