USB boot problem

Hi

I have a problem with booting L4T from a USB memory stick.
When I just have the on board eMMC and the USB stick, everything is fine.

However, when I add a PCIe Solid State Disk into the system, L4T fails to boot because of block device enumeration order.

Here is a log of the problem :

What I have worked out is that the PCIe device get enumerated as a block device first so the boot parameter “root=/dev/sda1” now refers to the wrong block device.

I have searched for solutions and found what I thought was a solution but it does not work. I found that the “root=” boot parameter can be set to use UUID (like this “root=UUID=f0685ccb-0ad9-43ad-950d-6def5cf76187” but this does not work on the Jetson.
I think it is because the USB enumeration does not include the UUID for the memory stick, it does for the partitions on the eMMC.

Does anyone know how I can solve this (get USB boot to work with SSD attached) please?

I have found a working solution BUT the UUID still does not work.
I found out how to use PARTUUID instead.

At the end, the kernel presents a list of block devices that are available with all the available information to the kernel. I noticed that the USB device does not have a valid UUID but the 00000000-01 I gussed is a part_uuid number.

Now I changed

root=/dev/sda1

to

root=PARTUUID=00000000-01

and the system boots up and all the drive are there !

I wonder why a UUID is not present during the kernel boot? It is there after booting into Unity desktop.

I expect your rootdev should be /dev/mmcblk0p1 , It may something wrong to recognize wrong block device .
There are two steps that you can try to correct rootdev :
Step1 :
Please find the partuuid from “/dev/disk/by-partuuid” corresponding to mmcblk0p1
root@tegra-ubuntu:/# ls -lah /dev/disk/by-partuuid/ | grep mmcblk0p1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Jan 4 01:17 7369c667-ff51-ec4a-29cd-baabf2fbe346 → …/…/mmcblk0p1

Step2 :
While flashing kernel, pass PARTUUID in root instead of /dev/mmcblk0p1
sudo ./flash.sh -C “root=PARTUUID=“7369c667-ff51-ec4a-29cd-baabf2fbe346” rootfstype=ext4 rw” -k 6 -K /…/zImage jetson-tk1 mmcblk0p1
here flash.sh command mandates rootdev (mmcblk0p1) to be specified.

while kernel boots it can be seen that root has changed to " root=PARTUUID=7369c667-ff51-ec4a-29cd-baabf2fbe346 rootfstype=ext4 rw "

Of course, you can also change root paramters in extlinux.conf files for bootloader
